A Historic Appointment
Daren Sammy has taken on a bigger role in West Indies cricket. He will now be the head coach for all formats. This includes Test matches from April 2025. He was already coaching the white-ball teams. Sammy is the first person in recent times to coach all three formats at once.
Success in White-Ball Cricket
Sammy has already shown great results as coach. He started in May 2023. Under him, West Indies have won 15 out of 28 ODIs. They have won four out of seven bilateral series. The T20 results are also strong. The team won 20 out of 35 T20I matches. They beat major teams like India, England, and South Africa.
The Test Cricket Challenge
Test cricket will be Sammy’s biggest challenge. West Indies are currently at the bottom of the World Test Championship table. Under current coach Andre Coley, they lost seven out of eleven matches. But there is hope. The team recently won against Australia in Brisbane.
Sammy’s Coaching Philosophy
Sammy didn’t always plan to be a coach. Now he has found a passion for coaching. He believes in developing players step by step. He knows rebuilding the Test team will take time. He has specific plans to improve Test cricket results.
Previous Coaching Experience
Sammy has good experience in franchise cricket. He coached the St Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League. He helped make the Kings a strong team. He also coached Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League. This gave him experience with different cricket styles.
CWI’s Vision
Miles Bascombe leads cricket development at CWI. He believes Sammy can bring consistency to all formats. They chose Sammy to create one cricket philosophy for all teams. This builds on his success with white-ball cricket.
